Make Sure Your Car’s Tires Are Safe This Winter

Maintain your tires this winter.

Because driving around in winter weather conditions can be very dangerous, it’s important that you take precautions to protect yourself and others around you.  One way to reduce your chances of getting into an accident this season is by making sure that your tires are in good condition.  Here’s what you should do to take care of your car’s tires this winter.

  • Do Not Overinflate

During the winter months, cold temperatures cause the air inside your tires to condense.  This, in turn, can cause your tire pressure to drop.  Oftentimes, drivers will overcompensate for underinflated tires and end up filling them up too much.  Unfortunately, when your tires are overinflated, they get less traction on the road.  This can leave you susceptible to skidding.  To avoid this risk, make sure that you stay within your car manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure range when adding air to your tires.

  • Replace Worn Tires

During winter, drivers need to check their tire tread much more frequently—about once a month.  To be considered safe, your tread should be at least 2/32 inch deep.  A good way to test the depth of your tread is by inserting a penny into the tread groove.  If your tread is deep enough to cover Lincoln’s head, then you should be okay.  However, if the tread is so worn down that it leaves Lincoln’s head exposed, then you need to replace your tires as soon as possible.

  • Switch to Winter Tires

If you live in a particularly cold area of the country, then you may want to consider getting winter tires on your car.  Winter tires are a great option for drivers because they are made of a thick rubber that is less susceptible to the negative effects of cold weather.  Additionally, these tires feature a deeper tread that allows them to get a better grip on the road.

These are some of the steps that you can take to maintain your tires and stay safe on the road this winter.  Want another way to protect yourself?  Then make sure you have the right auto insurance in place.  For assistance with all your car coverage needs, contact the experts at Duane Weber Insurance, Inc. in Kent, Washington, today.
