Get protection from the sun with these safety tips!
Warmer temperatures and a few extra hours of sunlight mean more time spent outdoors. From hiking to biking and everything in between, it’s important to be careful when spending time outside. When you’re outside, you’re exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays and heat that can be damaging to your body. Ensure that you’re protected when you’re out and about this summer with these sun safety tips.
Apply Plenty of Sunscreen.
It’s important to wear sunscreen whenever you’re outside, even when it’s cloudy. Powerful UV rays from the sun can be extremely damaging to your skin. Ensure that you apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you head outdoors and reapply every couple of hours. Additionally, make sure to buy a ‘broad spectrum’ brand with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30.
Wear a Hat.
While it’s important to wear sunscreen, protective clothing can add additional protection against the sun. Wear long pants, long sleeves, or a hat can give you more of a buffer from the damaging sun.
Drink Lots of Water.
Heat-related illnesses are common when it gets too hot. Many of these illnesses result from the body’s inability to cool itself. Ensure that you drink lots of water during the summer so that your body stays hydrated and cool.
Invest in Good Sunglasses.
UV rays aren’t just damaging to your skin. Such rays can also affect your eyes. Ensure that your eyes are protected with UV protected sunglasses. Without them, you may develop eye illnesses prematurely.
Avoid Peak Sun Hours.
The sun is usually strongest mid-day. Reduce your exposure between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to lessen your risk of sun-related issues.
